Twenty

Jennifer opened the wardrobe and gazed sadly at the little black dress. All that last-minute rush to get it restyled had gone to waste. Hetty and Dot would be very disappointed to hear about it. Dinner at The Ivy hadn’t happened. She could have cried. In the end, she did cry. Whether she was crying because she was worried about Jamie or out of sheer disappointment, she didn’t know.

She woke every hour on the hour. She rang Jamie’s mobile every hour on the hour. All of her calls went to voicemail. She received no messages and no texts – just silence. Half asleep, half awake, she was conscious of the sound of doors opening and doors closing and each time wondered whether it was Jamie who had returned. By the morning her eyes felt as though they were filled with shards of glass. She felt and looked every one of her seventy-four years, and wished that she could magically be beamed back to Magnolia. If he were not back, she would have no choice but to get herself to Paddington and then back to Stroud. A taxi would get her home. There was a time in the dim and distant past when nothing had daunted her. Right now, the very thought of packing, checking out, finding a taxi, a train and then another taxi filled her with despair – it made climbing Kilimanjaro seem like a walk in the park.

Always look on the bright side. Wasn’t that what she always told everyone else when they were down in the dumps? Now it was her turn. There were so many good things to remember: the shows, the shops, the restaurants they had visited; the laughter over a glass of wine as they reviewed each day and planned the following day. She had enjoyed every single minute of the time she had spent with Jamie. And then there had been that magical interlude with Alex. At least she had Jamie to thank for that. It would not have happened if he had not gone missing. No regrets.

Jennifer packed her suitcase. Check-out was at eleven, Jamie or no Jamie. Briefly, it occurred to her that if he had not returned, she ought to pack his suitcase and make some arrangements for its return. But if he did return to the hotel, then he would need his things.

There would, of course, be some perfectly simple explanation for the whole sorry matter. All would soon be forgiven and they would laugh about it. Sod’s law, he would waltz into the hotel minutes after she left and wonder why she hadn’t waited for him. Hesitating only fractionally, Jennifer knocked one last time on Jamie’s door – “I don’t suppose you’re in there, Jamie?” – before taking the lift down to reception.

“Good morning, Jennifer,” Trevor said. He didn’t add that he hoped she’d had a pleasant evening or a good night’s sleep – the black circles around her eyes told an entirely different story.

“Good morning, Trevor. I don’t suppose you’ve seen my gentleman friend?”

“The key is still on the keyboard.
